We covered the loss of the huge upcoming heavyweight co-main occasion for UFC Fight Night 76 yesterday with the announcement that Stipe Miocic was made to back out of his fight against Ben Rothwell, however there’s more to the story and also a few other struggle announcements/injuries to go over now. UFC is apparently searching for a short notice replacement for Miocic to step in and combat Rothwell in Dublin, and a couple of notable names set their names into the ring. The first was Matt Mitrione, who was fighting very well against Rothwell earlier this year before diving into a takedown effort that got him filed immediately via guillotine choke. Mitrione would not likely be the primary option due to his quick defeat, but he has a situation considering his appetite for redemption. The largest issue with Mitrione right now is the fact he’s now booked to combat Travis Browne in January. Another and most fascinating replacement opportunity came from out of left field as world class kickboxer Tyrone Spong requested an opportunity to fight Rothwell. Spong, who currently trains with the Blackzilians in Boco Ratan, has made a name for himself as perhaps the very best light heavyweight striker on the planet with a kickboxing record of 74-7-1 with one no contest. His mixed martial arts qualifications, but are a lot more sparse. Spong is currently 2-0 at MMA, with just two successes under the World Series of Fighting banner, although he hasn’t fought with an MMA bout in over two years and hasn’t competed professionally in any combat game since suffering a leg injury against Gokhan Saki 18 weeks ago. The biggest problem here would be cash, as I’m sure signing Spong to some UFC bargain on short notice would not come cheap. In other accident replacement news… Justin Lawrence vs Emmanuel Sanchez — Bellator 145 Regrettably, an accident to former Bellator champion Pat Curran has forced him from his fight against Justin Lawrence just over three weeks before their departure was set to happen. In steps Emmanuel Sanchez, a 25-year older fighter out of this Roufusport Fitness Center in Milwaukee with an 11-2 record all around. Sanchez is currently 3-1 beneath the Bellator bannerlosing a choice to Curran already and many recently picked up a split decision victory over Henry Corrales two and a half weeks ago at Bellator 143. This will surely not be a simple for fight for Sanchez, especially on short notice and with such a fast turnaround. I would expect Lawrence to be a moderate to heavy favorite by the time that the chances are drawn up.
